Thinker staff writer Kenzi Bustamante produced a video condemning the University of Chicago Medicine Ryan Center’s 23-week, six-day abortion offerings. UChicago’s practice is “immoral, disgusting, and needs to stop immediately,” she contends.
“UChicago Medicine, specifically the Ryan Center, advertises its second-trimester abortions up to 23 weeks and six days,” Bustamante says in her video. “They do these procedures in the same building where they have the capacity to provide life-saving care to babies as young as 22 weeks.”
According to a news release from UChicago Medicine’s Comer Children’s Hospital, “[b]abies have been admitted to [its] Small Baby Unit as early as 22 weeks.”
Bustamante continues, charging that the Ryan Center is “discriminating against unwanted babies by committing infanticide”: “There is no medical necessity for abortion at 23, 22, 21 weeks or before. Birth is always an option, especially when the hospital has life-saving care these premature babies need.”
“From a business standpoint, it makes perfect sense,” Bustamante says, using a pointed rhetorical question to evince the heartlessness of UChicago’s late second trimester abortions: “Why care for unwanted babies from low-income families and incur the cost their support necessitates? It’s much easier to dismember them in the womb out of medical necessity.”
UChicago’s late second trimester abortion offerings are “immoral, disgusting, and need[] to stop immediately,” Bustamante concludes. “UChicago Medicine should be held accountable for the countless lives its doctors have taken.”
Bustamante’s video is in reference to a recent article from Thinker editor Ben Ogilvie, who characterizes UChicago’s late second trimester abortions as “illegal” under the Illinois Reproductive Health Act. Two national outlets, The Federalist and The Post Millennial, picked up Ogilvie’s coverage.
