Professor Harald Uhlig will participate in a student session on Thursday, November 17 at 7 PM Central. He is a fellow of the Econometric Society and the Bruce Allen and Barbara Ritzenthaler Professor in Economics at the University of Chicago.
The topics of the student session will be academic freedom and free speech, two values that Uhlig holds dear. During the fiery summer of 2020, a cancel mob attempted to force him to resign from the editorship of the Journal of Political Economy over remarks critical of Black Lives Matter. The mob was unsuccessful and Uhlig’s contract expired, as planned, in June 2021.
Sanjay Srivatsan, a Thinker staff writer who is the vice president of the UChicago College Republicans, announced the student session via tweet:
Uhlig chaired the UChicago Department of Economics from 2009 to 2012. In the recent past, he has offered support for content from Thinker staff.
